FINED £ls AND LICENSE CANCELLED Arrested oh Thursday evening, after the motor-car which he was driving had collided with another motor-car on the Opihi traffic bridge, Maurice John Hartnett pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle, at a special sitting of the Police Court in Temuka yesterday morning. Hartnett was fined £ls and he was prohibited from obtaining a license to drive a motor vehicle be- | fore June 1, 1939. Messrs E. Blackmore and H. E. Capper, J’s. P.. were on the bench. For the accused, Mr G. J. Walker pleaded for leniency, on the grounds that the accused had not been convicted of any traffic offence for eight years. He had not been enjoying good health for some days. In fining Hartnett £ls and ordering his driving license to be cancelled till June 1, 1939, the bench remarked that, in view of the accused man’s history, the court was extending him leniency. NO CYCLING EVENTS CALEDONIAN SPORTS AT TEMUKA A decision not to hold any cycling events at this year’s sports meetmg of the Temuka Caledonian Society because of the rough state of the track on the Temuka Domain Oval was reached at a meeting of the society held with the president Mr G. Washington, presiding. At a meeting of the society held last week the secretary, Mr J. H. Denison, reported on the rough state of the track, and it was decided to inspect it, and ask the chairman of the Temuka Domain Board, Mr A. W. Buzan, to be present. A report of the condition of the track and of the inspection was given at Thursday night’s meeting, and it was resolved, in view of the unfitness of the track, not to include the usual cycling events on the programme for the sports on Boxing Day. It was further reported that a suggestion had been made that the track be raised and a cinder track laid down in place of the bitumen. , The programme for this year’s sports meeting was also revised. TEMUKA PERSONAL NOTES Mrs R. Green (Abbotsford), who has been spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs W. J. Keyes, King street, Temuka, will return home to-day. Y.W.C.A. FUND WANTED FOR PERMANENT HOME “The future of the Young Women’s Christian Association is obscure, and there are many problems with which to contend,” said the annual report of that organisation to the annual meeting, over which Mrs T. E. Holdgate presided. “With our small reserve almost depleted, and our hostel only available on a weekly rental, we feel that we should make an effort to establish a fund for a permanent home.” The annual report, which. was adopted, showed iat the association had had a busy year.
