FINAL OF SHEEP DOG TRIALS

* FINE WORK IN YARDING AND DRIVING TEST The last events in the show, but by no means the least interesting, were the final runs in the sheepdog trial. Every year this trial has gained in the attraction it has for the public, but unfortunately because of the late hour the majority of the huge crowd there earlier in the day had vanished, and did not see the driving and yarding work of these sagacious dogs and their masters. The final runs were confined to four dogs—H. White’s Frisk, the same owner’s Gale, John Trotter’s Little Joe, and J. E. Royds’s Streak. These dogs finished the first day’s trials in that order. Yesterday each of the four dogs did splendid work again, but the result was unchanged, Frisk giving an almost faultless performance to maintain his lead easily. The following table shows the points won oh the first day and yesterday, and the totals: Ist Day. 2nd Day. Tl. Frisk .. 44 43 87 Little Joe .. 43* 42 85* Gale ..43 41 84 Streak .. 41 41 82 The comments of the judge, Mr C. A. Parker, on the final day’s events, were as follows: — Frisk was steady throughout on a good course, and had good command of the sheep all the way, yarding well at the finish. Little Joe was good to the first hurdles, but was a little keen between the first and second hurdles, and the man had to run to keep the sheep on the course.. The third , drive was quite fair, but at the pen Little Joe turned tail, and spoilt a very good pen. Gale was unfortunate in missing the first hurdles. From there on the run was practically faultless, and the yarding a really. brilliant performance. Streak had very quiet sheep to deal with, and they grazed on the course. The dog did not show very wonderful style, but kept the sheep quiet all the way. He yarded them very easily.
