UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF FIGURES FOR RANGIORA DISTRICT Seventy relief workers in the Rangiora district will receive sustenance payments next week, compared with 76 this week. The number to be employed under the No. 5 scheme is 79, compared with 76 this week. Two men have registered as unemployed at the Government Employment Bureau, Rangiora, since last Friday. This mynber is the same as that for the previous week. Armistice Church Parade About 50 returned soldiers will take part in an Armistice Day parade to St. John’s Anglican Church, Rangiora, on Sunday. Lieutenant-Colonel J. A. Mackenzie will be in charge, and the Rangiora Brass Band, under Bandmaster H. T. Cates, will be in attendance. The returned soldiers will wear mufti and medals. Personal Mr W. Lintott, of Rangiora, is a patient at the Christchurch Public Hospital. Returned Soldiers’ Tournament The secretary of the Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr T. W. Herron) has accepted an invitation for members to visit the Christchurch association to play a cards, billiards, and snooker tournament on November 25. Borough School Committee A decision to spend £ls on library books was made by the Rangiora Borough School Committee at a meeting on Wednesday evening. This amount will be sublsdised by the Canterbury Education Board, making another £4 available. Mr C. J. Smith presided at the meeting. The headmaster (Mr C. D. Gilhng) reported a roll of 369. and an average attendance of 330.4. Mr W, H. Johnston (agricultural instructor) had visited the school, and reported favourably on what he saw. The proficiency examination would be held on December 8 and 9. The names of eight children who would benefit by attending a health camp had been given to the Education Board for the consideration of the school medical officer. Regent Theatre
There will be a special matinee this afternoon at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora, when George Arliss will be seen in the brililant comedy romance. “The Guv’nor,” supported by Gene Gerrard and Viola Keats. “The Vanishing Shadow” will also be shown. The nrogramme will be repeated this evening and again to-morrow afternoon and evening. Seats may be reserved at Watson's, telephone 202. SPRINGSTON SUNSHINE CLUB Mrs P. V. Bailey (president) presided over the usual meeting of the Springston Sunshine Club. The senior competition for a plate of pikelets resulted: —Miss M. Kime 1, Miss J. JJaskett 2. The junior competition for a sponge roll resulted:—Miss Marjorie Everest 1. Miss Rona Stace 2. A competition was won by Miss J. Haskett. Ladies’ Guild A social afternoon for members of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild was held at the parsonage. Solos were sung by Mrs J. W. Marshall and Miss M. Mounce, and a competition was won by Miss M. Mounce. Mrs C. H. Kendon was accompanist. OXFORD YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Oxford Young Farmers' Club, held with Mr G. Kimber (president) presiding. The secretary reported that there had not been a very good response from sheep owners about supplying the list of registered brands and earmarks which the club was compiling. It was decided to organise a field day early in December and to invite the Oxford branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, also the CustWest Eyreton Farmers’ Union and Young Farmers’ Club. Mr C. Mears gave an address on farming in Australia. WEEDONS METHODIST CHURCH The Weedons Methodist Church held a successful spring fair in the public school recently. The various stalls were artistically decorated, and each ...lowed a splendid display of fancy work, knitting and sewing, woodwork and hardware, Oakes, sweets, spring flowers, -etc. The gathering was opened by the Rev. C. H. Kendon. The judges were as follows:—Spring flowers, the Rev. C. H. Kendon; sewing and fancy work, Mrs Kendon and Miss Porter; woodwork and hardware, Messrs J. Curragh and F. Schaffer; cakes, Mrs D. McVinnie. The following were the prize-win-ners;— Fancy sewing, Miss Jean Schaffer; knitting, Mrs W. J. Chambers; best made article costing less than Is to make, Mrs D. Hight; cooking. Mrs D. Hight; spring flowers, Mrs J. Burnett: woodwork, Mr G. Chambers; under 18, William Willets; boys under 15 years, Douglas Willets; girls 12 to 15 years, Yvonne Schaffer; under 11 years, Joan Pearce; most points in the show, Mrs D. Hight. The sum of £ls was raised. HORNBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Hornby School Committee was held, with Mr F. A. McTeigue in the chair. The headmaster’s report said that the roll number was 283 and the average attendance 259. Hie resignations of Miss I. N. Walker and Mr R. H. Thfemson were accepted. The school picnic will be held on December 19, at Corsair Bay.
