METHVEN SWIMMING CLUB

The annual meeting of members of the Methven Amateur Swimming Club was held in the Methven Town Hall. Mr H. Reid presided. The annual report showed that, in spite of unfavourable weather for several of their functions, the club had had a successful season. The annual carnival was held on January 29. During the season Mr B. Dorsa was appointed caretaker. The lighting system at the baths had not proved to be The success that was anticipated. Financially the club’s position was sound, a credit balance of £l4 2s 7d being shown. The election of officers for the year resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr A. F. Marr; president, Mr Hector Reid; vicepresidents, Messrs J. R. Dalton, H. J. Freeman, J. G. A. Ruddenklau, S. Smith, H. G. Ayers, and T. S. Harrison; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Green; assistant secretary, Mr D. J. Ail ken; delegates to Ashburton Swimming Association, Messrs A. R. Gourley, R. M. McGregor, and H, Reid; club captain, Mr A. Cook; vice-captain, Mr P. Cookson; honorary auditor, Mr H. Green; club handicapper. Mr A. Gourley; committee, Messrs J. Compton, M. Walker, E. A. Fitzgibbon, T. Owers, P. Kelliher, and N. Wootton. The arrangements for a ladies’ committee were left in the hands of Messrs K. Dickie, M. Dalton, and B. Reid. It was decided to hold the opening carnival on the evening of November 17. The question of bathing hours was discussed, and it was agreed to ask the committee to revise these before the opening of the season.

About 20 pupils of the Ashburton High School will sit the university entrance examination next month, compared with 24 last year. Three pupils from the Ashburton Technical High School, the same number as last year, will also sit the examination.
