INMATE OF MENTAL HOSPITAL
APPLICATION TO SUPREME COURT An application for the examination by the court of a patient in a mental hospital was heard by Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court yesterday. Evidence was given by Drs. R. H. Q. Baxter, J. P. McQuilldn, and John Russell, deputy director-general of mental hospitals, and by the patient himself. His Honour requested that details which would give any clue to the identity of persons concerned should not be published. Having heard the evidence, his Honour said that the patient came clearly within the category of feeble-minded persons. He was therefore called upon to decide whether he was so feebleminded that it was proper to detain him. His Honour, without making any order for release, decided that the boy should be released under the care of some fit person, and in that way be given a chance of pursuing an ordinary life. The case was adjourned to allow such arrangement to be made. If it were not arranged, his Honour said, he would hear the case again, when he would make a decision. Mr R. A. Young, instructed by Mr G. S. Branthwaite, appeared for the applicant and Mr A. W. Brown for the Mental Hospitals Department.
