PENALTY OF £25 IMPOSED Daniel Francis Hector McDonald, a tailor, 29 years of age, was fined £25 and costs in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of keeping a common gaming house at 5 McLeod street Chidf-Detective W. H. Dunlop, who prosecuted, said that when McDonald was arrested on Tuesday afternoon by Detective McClung and Detective Parish, he was taking bets on the Addington trots. The amount of the bets taken up till 10 a.m. was about £2O, made up of bets from £ 1 downwards. McDonald said he rarely took bets of £l. He was only in a small way. “I will fine you £25 this time,” said the magistrate (Mr E. C. Levvey), "but next time I will impose the maximum.” BARMAN FINED. Herbert Fox, a barman, appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey. S.M., at a special sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at the Christchurch Police Station yesterday afternoon, and pleaded guilty to a charge of using the public bar of the New City Hotel as a common gaming house. Fines of £25 and £SO respectively were imposed on William Gordon Robertson, aged 42, and Francis William Fitzpatrick, aged 64, who were separately charged this morning before Mr J. Miller, S.M., with carrying on business as bookmakers. The magistrate warned the second accused that a future charge would lead to a sterner punishment. Both accused pleaded guilty. ,
