WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

PREBBLETON BRANCH

Mrs T. Coleman presided at a meeting of the Women’s Institute .committee, when invitations to the Templeton Institute’s birthday on October 15, and to Lincoln on October 30 were received.

The financial statement of the recent '“hayseed” dance disclosed a satisfactory credit balance. It was decided to order a further supply- of cookery books. The programme for the next half year’s work was prepared.

GLENTUNNEL BRANCH

Mrs L. A, Marshall presided at the monthly meeting of the Glentunnel Women’s Institute. The meeting began v/ith the singing of the institute song. Ic was decided to support the appeals from the Institute for the Blind and the Health Stamp Campaign. Marshals were appointed for the arts and crafts exhibition to be held at Kirwee this month. Miss Ridgen (Greendale) gave an interesting talk on her travels abroad. There was an excellent display of spring flowers, the various sections being judged by Mrs Ridgen, Greendale. During the afternoon Mrs Marshall made a presentation to Mrs M. Dickie, a valued member who has left the district. ,

The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. N. Chapman and J. Stuart

Mrs Tomlinson 2, Mrs Mclntosh 3. An elocutionary item was given by Miss Pat Smith.

KAKAHU BRANCH

A demonstration of the mixing and baking of bread was given by Miss Robinson at a meeting of the Kakahu branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union at its monthly meeting. Miss N. Maxwell presided. The president gave an interesting talk on the girls’ educational week in Timaru.

Arrangements for the birthday party were discussed, and it was decided to hold a concert and dance in November. It was also decided to hold a meeting of all interested in the proposed A.C.E. drama class at an early date.

The competitions, judged by the Misses Robinson, resulted:—Paper flowers (poppies): Misses J. Chapman and M. Aitken ,(equal) 1, L. Pitt 3. Roses; Mrs 1.. Pitt 1. N. Dean 2, L. Pitt 3. AKAROA BRANCH

The president. Miss E. le Lievre, presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly general meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. Mr J. Drummond, honorary secretary of the Akaroa Silver Band Committee, wrote asking for assistance toward the final payment of the band’s instruments. It was decided to recommend that a gift shop be held in November. Mrs G. A. Hammond was elfcted Peninsula group convener for the coming term. . The president expressed sorrow at the recent departure of the honorary secretary. Mrs C. A. Young, to Invercargill and reported that Mrs F. C. Newton had agreed to act as honorary secretary and Miss D. Leete as minute secretary for the remainder of the year. Mrs G. A- E. le Lievre had been co-opted to the committee. Gaarder; of Duvauchelle, gave a most interesting account of a holiday in Paris. Miss E. le Lievre, president, and Mrs F. C. Newton, honorary secretary, were appointed delegates to the half-! yearly meeting in Christchurch, Mrs F. C. Newton, leader' of the drama circle, reported that the circle would give a play reading, in December. The following were the results of the competitions:—Best bloom, Mesdames H. Nelson Wright and C. Innes (equal) 1,-Miss A. Brocherie 2, Mrs H. Wood ill 3; plate of biscuits, Mrs D. Narbey 1. „ „ Mesdames W. E. M. Jacobson, C. C. Narbey, G. M. Kearney, and N. Bell were hostesses for the afternoon.

ESK VALLEY

At the October meeting of the Esk Valley Women’s Institute there was a splendid attendance of members, with Mrs L. R. Bishop presiding. Mrs Sutton, who has. been appointed sole teacher at the Esk Valley School, was welcomed by the president for the institute and district.

Mrs Bockaert gave the monthly garden talk and read the rules for the cottage garden competition, to be judged in February. The fourth of the golden thread talks on notable people was given by Miss Portw. who spoke on Mr Stanley Baldwin.

Miss Knox gave an instructive demonstration bn raffia and canework. many finished articles being exhibited and admired.

The hostesses were Mrs L. R. Bishop and Miss Molly Toohey, Miss C. Midgley interested the members with a talk on marquetry work. Competitions resulted:—Jar of narcissi; Mrs L. R. Bishop 1.
