AMBULANCE SUB-CENTKE

MEETING .

One hundred and thirty-four eaarat, including Zl accident cases, were transported by the Lyttelton St. John Free Ambulance, according to the ♦report submitted at the annual meeting ai the Lyttelton Sub-Centre of St. John Ambulance, last evening. A total of 8752 miles was covered by the ambulance. Classes in first aid and home nursing had been commenced at Teddington and Motukarara and were showing good progress. Public duties had been carried cut by members of the brigade and nursing division. Mr J. T. Norton presided at the meeting and there was an attendance of about 30.

Mr J. W. Crampton, assistant-com-missioner for Canterbury and Westland, in referring to the progress of the sub-centre, said that Lyttelton had given a wonderful lead in maintaining a very fine nursing division and ambulance division. They must endeavour to-reach an even higher standard cf efficiency. He spoke of the need for a far greater number of first-aiders in New Zealand, and outlined proposals for a young helpers’ league for boys and girls of pre-cadet age and for motor ambulance divisions, with the object of instructing all motorists in first aid. Mr'C. H. Kersley, secretary of the Christchurch centre, said that Lyttelton was to be congratulated on being the only sub-centre which had its own ambulance.

A social was given by members of the Lyttelton Railway Ambulance Division and the Lyttelton Nursing Division in the Seamen’s Institute Hall on Tuesday night, in honour of Mr J. Lister, superintendent of the ambulance division, who has been transferred fo Greymouth, Songs, games, and dancing were held, dance music being provided by the Lyttelton’s Own Orchestra. On behalf of members of the ambulance division, Mr W. Burgess presented Mr Lister with a clock, and spoke of the valuable service given by Mr Lister to the division. Miss M, Nystram, on behalf of the nursing division. presented a brass tray and glasses to Mrs Lister and a necklace to Miss Lister. Mr and Mrs Lister thanked the members of the divisions for the gilts and for their expressions of appreciation and goodwill. New Sailing Boat Arrives Mr F. I. Sutton’s new sailing boat, Wanaka. arrived at Lyttelton yesterday. It is expected that the boat will be out for a trial to-day. Hockey Club Dance The Trinity Hockey Club held Its annual dance last evening in the club hall. There was a moderate attendance. Music was played by Frank Hitching’s orchestra, and Mr E. Adams was master of ceremonies. A Monts Carlo waltz was won by Mr K McCormick and Miss Jean Wiltshire, and

lucky-snct dance by Mr N< Sergison and Miss L. Lidgard. During the evening Mr C. S. Clements, president cf the Canterbury Hockey Association, presented the following trophies won by the club dufing the season:—Senior shield, junior A cup, third grade A cup, fourth grade cup, fifth grade cup, and the Grey shield for the champion club. The president of the club, Mr A. L. Graham, said the club had had a record season, winning all five grades for which it had entered, also several five-a-side tournaments.
