COLLISIDN IN THE AIR

Big Aeroplane Lands

On One Wheel

EXTRAORDINARY MISHAP OVER IRISH SEA

(UKXTKD pass* ABSOCIATIOK —COPTKICmT.)

(Received October 5, 9 p.m.)

LONDON, October 4,

“Port wheel burst. Clear the aerodrome for arrival at 3.45 p.m.” This was the sensational wireless message received at the Renfrew airport from Captain Elgey, who was flying a 10-seater passenger aeroplane from Belfast to Glasgow with two other employees of the company on board.

The aeroplane was at 4000 feet over the Irish Sea, flying in dense mist when there was a violent bump and an explosion. Captain Elgey said he did not know what had happended. He just waited for the aeroplane to fall to pieces in the sea, but when he flew out of the mist he looked out and saw that the greater part of the undercarriage and the port wheel had disappeared. Apparently the aeroplane had been hit by another aeroplane climbing in the haze. Captain Elgey miraculously landed the heavy aeroplane on the remaining wheel without mishap, swinging the machine round as it touched ground. What hit the aeroplane is still a mystery. No aeroplane is reported missing.
