ELIMINATION OF RADIO INTERFERENCE
ONE CAUSE REMOVED
The installation of new apparatus by Dr. H. T. J. Thacker at his surgery in Bealey avenue has eliminated one cause of radio interference in Christchurch. The new electric ray machine, of the latest American design, uses a short wave, and does not affect radio reception in any way, as was shown by tests carried out yesterday. The old one will not be used again. ' • The tests were made yesterday morning by Mr T. Gates, chief radio inspector in Christchurch, and-his assistant, Mr D. Smith. With the old apparatus in use. a portable radio set in P the same room showed interference, but with the new apparatus in use no effect was found, and reception was perfect. An electric radio set outside the room was also used, and after tests lasting an hour no effects on reception were noticed.. Dr. Thacker said that his pld apparatus was not the only cause of the noises which interrupted reception. It was never used between Friday evening and Monday morning, but people had often blamed it for interference- during' that period.. Other apparatus of a similar kind continued to be Used; To silence such apparatus it was necessary to place it in a steel - enclosed room.
Mr Gates said that the new apparatus needed no filters or screens; as it employed a short, wave. He paid a tribute' : to the consideration';' ft Dr. Thacker had shown in allowing filters to be placed on the old machine. Every effort had been made to eliminate interference by these means, but they all had been fruitless. The only remedy was to replace the old machine with a new one, add this had been done. Dr. Thacker spoke highly of the patient work, of Mr Gates and his assistant in trying to silence his old apparatus. The new machine was 10 years younger, and would give no trouble at aIL .
