SUBURBAN CLUB

TEAMS

OPENING OF SEASON

STANDARD WILL BE HIGHER THIS YEAR

Many of the cricket clubs 5 affiliated to the' Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association will be strengthened this year by the addition of new players of ability, and the form shown at the opening practices of the season on Saturday point to a higher standard of play in this popular competition, The Railway Club has a surplus of players in both , teams. The sehlof team will be much the same as last season, with the addition of C. Candlish and Heazelwood. Two of last year's players will be dropped to the second team. The seniors will include E. Grenfell, E. Brooks, L. Hood, and Don and Dave Mitchell. There is a probability of J. J. Kerr being available again this year, and a place may be found for this promising young batsman.

Sunnyside Stronger Playing on its home ground, Sunnyside will be considerably strengthened as R. Chlnnery will be out again, this year after a season with Lancaster

Park. In addition to Chinnery, W. Jory. who played for Oxford in the North Canterbury Association’s competition, has joined the club, and there is a likelihood of an old Wanganui and Auckland player of repute being included in the team. A match which is being arranged between the Sunnyside team and a colts’ team for Labour Day may give some indication of the strength of the side. . Shirley occupied both wickets at Richmond Park on Saturday, and there was a muster of 50- players. All last year’s seniors were out, including G. Cullen, E. Taylor, L. Kirk, W. Bampton, and N. Archer. W. Hanmgan 'will be an absentee this year, having transferred to the Opava Club. - frank Smith to Play Of Beckenham’s senior players of last year A. McMillan will be absent this season, but the inclusion of r. Smith, the former Lancaster Park man, and F. Davison, of Templeton, will more than compensate for the loss. N. Stokds will probably captain the senior side, which will include J. Columbus, E. Cox. S. Cawtheray, M. Meath, and R. Griffiths.‘ The acceptance of 18 new players at Saturday’s opening will enable the club to enter six teams in the various grade competitions. Marlst held an opening day game-at Woolston Park with a full team, which included M. Noonan, who has returned to the club after two years’ absence. E. Thorne and J. Haley will be absent, but R. Gillespie has rejoined the club, which should have a fairly strong side. The transfer of A. Davis to East Christchurch will weaken the bowling of the Working Men’s Club, and the senior team will he slightly weaker than last season. The team finished fourth in the competition last year, but with C. Smith. F. Warr, S. Clegg, H. Hooper, L. McLachlan and T. Gilroy the side should be a fairly strong one..
