COST OF STREET LIGHTING

BULLER MINING TOWNS OBJECTIONS t OF THE COUNTY COUNCIL The opinion that the Mines Department end the various coal companies should contribute towards the cost of street lighting in mining townships within the Buller County was expressed by the chairman (Mr R. J. Hawes) at the monthly meeting of the council this week, when consideration was being given to a letter from the Ngakawau Miners’ Union asking that 18 ac xtional lights be put up. Mr Hawes sai that the whole question of lighting would have to be considered. At present lighting was costing the council £3OO, and if the concessions asked fox; in the various townships were granted it would entail an annual expenditure of £SOO. He considered that if the council decided to discontinue supplying street lighting it would result in quick action by the Mines Der tment and the coal companies. It was decided Co .obtain new globes for lights, already in existence; but not to supply further lights pending an investigation of the position.
