CYCLING

FIFTY MILES TITLE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE ON SATURDAY

A strong though smaller field than usual has been entered for the 50 miles road cycling championship of Canterbury, which will be held to-morrow from the Templeton Hotel. The race will be controlled by the Technical Amateur Cycling Club, and will start at 2.15 pm. The riders will go to Rakaia and back, branching at Bankslde to cover a triangular block on the way. The strong scratch team seen in action last Saturday will be out again and should make excellent time given good weather. It consists of F. J. Grose, H. B. Blake way. and I. J. Tfiylor (Papanui), and C. E. Hall (Avon). Last Saturday, in a close finish, Blakeway beat Grose, and to-morrow’s race should produce another keen tussle. The two-minute bunch, consisting of A. J. Lancaster, E. W. Stevens, E. G. Taylor, and A. S. Schulz, should also make good time and may be strong enough to challenge the scratch men for fastest times. G. R. Homer, a Dunedin scratch rider, will figure on the 3 i-minute mark. He has come to Canterbury to gain experience, and has been generously treated for his first outing. On the same mark, are D. R. Edwards, the Canterbury Junior champion, and J. Campbell, a former scratch rider. W. P. Wilcockson, another former scratch rider, will make his first appearance for some time, starting from the same mark. Last year the scratch men went through the field to take the leading places, F. J. Grose recording fastest time and taking ;first place. The scratch team will again be a strong one, but will have perhaps stronger opposition from other backmarkers. In conjunction with the race there will be a competition for the Scott Service Cup. to be won by the dub whose first four men. as a team, give the best performance. Points will be calculated on the principle used in cross-country running
