Landing Parties Ready On Rebel Warships SHORE BATTERIES REPLY EFFECTIVELY (UNITED PEESS ASSOCIATION —COPYBIGHT.) (Received August 19, 10.45 p.m.) LONDON, August 19. The Hendaye correspondent of “The Times” says one was killed and 50 wounded during a bombardment of San Sebastian by the insurgent warships Almirante Cervera and Espana. Twenty shells fell inside the harbour and 80 in different parts of the town, battering seafront houses. One shell fell on a maternity hospital. Both ships are believed -to have landing parties aboard, and a strict watch is being kept on the coaslrto prevent any attempt at a landing. As a reprisal for the bombardment it is reported that Count Romanones and three other prominent hostages are to be tried for high, ti eason. The Irun correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” reports that the insurgent warships later heavily shelled Fort Guadalupe, overlooking Irun,' but moved off when the fort began to reply. An intercepted wireless message from the Almirante Cervera stated that she was going to Ferrol for repairs. The Vessel is believed to have been hit and badly damaged by a shell from one of the shore batteries. CASUALTIES IN WAR * TWENTY THOUSAND DEAD DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AND TRADE £ 125,000,000 August 19. The “Daily Mail” estimates that the civil war in Spain has already cost £ 125,000,000 in damage to trade, commerce, and property. The newspaper assesses the casualties at 8000 killed in battle or shot after surrender or court-martial; 12,000 killed in street fighting; 14,000 wounded in battle or street fighting. Eight thousand soldiers and civilians are imprisoned and 10,000 are held as hostages, chiefly wealthy business men, priests, and nuns.
