Ward objected to unwilling unionists being compelled to contribute to political parties, and moved an amendment setting out that members of a society should be given particulars of any ; resolution before a ballot was taken, and also that no member should be penalised if he did tp contribute. The Hon. M. Connelly opposed the amendment. The. Hon. R. Masters said the bill only made legal what was being done at present. Institutions contributed to political objects without a sharehold* ers’ meeting. « The Hon. R. McCallum opposed contributions to political- objects, Mr Ward withdrew his amendment. The bill was passed. Two days’ leave of absence was granted to the Hon, B. Martin because of illness." - ■* •" - ’■ The Council adjourned at 4.10 pm.
