SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL

ALLEGED BREACHES OF BY-LAWS A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr T. Newburgh), Councillors G. F. Allen, F. J. Barlow, C. E. Claydon, E. T. Chitty, F. T. Eldridge, and H. Y. Widdowson. The Mayor extended a welcome to Cr. Eldridge, who returned to the council table after some weeks of absence due to illness. The Minister for Labour wrote conveying his appreciation of the Work of the unemployment committee at Sumner, now 'disbanded. He asked that this appreciation be conveyed to the rpembers of the committee. The Mayor said that advice had been received from the State Coal authorities that the price of coal supplied to tile gasworks had been increased by 2s a ton. He said that this was a distinct blow, as it was a struggle to get the gasworks on to a payable basis. The council would be badly hit, and he thought that consumers would have , to face it. There had been an increase in wages which, together with the increase in the price of coal, might result in an increase in the price of gas and coke. The gas and electricity committee would have to consider these factors and report to the council at a later meeting. Discussion occurred over the serious breach of the borough by-laws in the many cases of speeding over the intersections. It was decided to erect notices on the borough boundaries at the top of Evans Pass and at McCormack’s Bay notifying motorists of a maximum speed of 25 miles an hour through the borough and 15 miles an hour over intersections. The Christchurch Yacht Club asked if a sign could be erected at Shag" Rock notifying yachtsmen of the dangerous current near Shag Rock during an outgoing tide. The Mayor said that this was a matter for the Lyttleton Harbour Board, and it was left to the Mayor and the town clerk to make the necessary arrangements. Crs Allen, Claydon, and Chitty were appointed as the council’s representatives on the Sumner Library Committee, Attention was drawn by the Mayor to the danger, created by the flat top of the rock Wall along the road at the £pof the cliffs towards Whitewash * ro , m - Scarborough road, Children had been seen walking along this wall, and it constituted a very , real danger. | Authority was given for the placing of pointed rocks on the too.
