LENIENCY BECAUSE OF WOMAN’S HEALTH

WANGANUI, August 12, Because of the state of health of a married woman, aged 42, who visited the shop of Frank B. Berry and stole four pounds of butter, valued St 4s, and a tin of baking powder, while Detective Packman and Constable Sergeant were secreted In the rear of the premises, Mr J. H. Salmon fined her £5 and suppressed her name. The Magistrate said that although he proposed to deal with the accused leniently, the court had a duty to shopkeepers and traders as well as to the defendants. Mrs H. Stokes presided at the usual monthly meeting of the Peaks Women’s institute. It was decided to give £2 to the local library and 7s 6d to the North Canterbury Federation. Mrs Stokes was appointed to take charge of the institute recipe book. A competition for the best plate of gems was won by Mrs H. Inch, with Mrs C.- McKeegan second and third. The best flower in my garden was won by Mrs J. Quigley, with Mrs H. Inch second and Mrs Quigley third. The competition for the best silver beet was won by Mrs McKeegan, and Mrs H. Inch was second. The roll call was uses of baking soda. The hostesses were Mrs and Miss Hewett.

AKAROA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The president, Miss E. Le Lievre, presided at the monthly general meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Miss McGuire., It was decided that the suggestion of the president to hold a husbands’ evening, be adopted. Mesdames D. Narbey, H. J. Le Lievre, B. P. Hammond, G. Le Lievre, Misses E. Kiegan and B. Jacobson were appointed a committee to make arrangements for the evening. < 3 r he president made a presentation of an institute cookery book to Miss Gwendolyn Curry, who was soon to be married. The competitions resulted;— Best bloom: Mrs C. A. Young I, Mesdames F. Brocherle and R. Bruce equal 2. Home-made toffee: Mrs W. H. Moore I, Mrs G. M. Kearney 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. Nelson Wright, G. Le Lievre, Misses A. Brocherie and B. Jacobson.
