Miss May Newton (Onslow street), who has been visiting Mrs A A, Macfarlane, “Ngawiro,” Rotherham, returned home yesterday. Miss Nancy Robertson, who arrived in Christchutch yesterday morning from Auckland, will visit her parents, Mr and Mrs A. M. Robertson, Avoca Valley. Miss E: Ormond and Mrs G. Macleod Smith (London) have taken a flat at Papanui for race week. Later they will leave for ihe North Island.

Commander and Mrs George Dennistoun and Mrs Ynyr Robinson (Peel Forest) are the guests of Mrs F. H. Pyne, Victoria Mansions, Victoria street, for race week. Miss Ruth Phillips (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs L. W. Matson, Fendalton.

Mr and Mrs James Hossack (Edinburgh, Scotland), who have been staying for a few days with Mr and Mrs H. F. Herbert (Fendalton), will return to Scotland via America. They left by the' steamer express last night. Mr Hossack has been teaching at the Otago Boys’ High School, Dunedin, having interchanged with the Royal High School, Edinburgh. Mrs George Hennessy (Morven) is visiting her mother, Mrs C. S. Bowden, Papanui road. Miss Marjorie Curlett, Hastings, is showing sports and linen mesh garments at Room 21, Regent Theatre Building. ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS DANCE AT NEW BRIGHTON The decorations arranged at the Masonic Hall, New Brighton, and the provision made for the comfort of the guests, was evidence of a great deal of work and forethought on the part of the organising committee, at a social and dance sponsored by the New Brighton Borough Council to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the formation of the borough. The council sub-committee, comprising the Mayor, the Deputy-Mayor, and Cr. A. W. Owles, was assisted by a large and willing band of helpers. Mr J. H. Coddington was director of ceremonies, and was assisted by Mr R. Parker as master of ceremonies. The attendance was well over 200, and included a great number of the oldest residents of the borough and surrounding districts. . The Hon, D. G. Sullivan and his party, who were specially invited guests, were met at the post office by the New Brighton Municipal Band, under Conductor J. A. Nuttall, and played to the dance hall. With the Hon. D. G. Sullivan and Mrs Sullivan were Miss Kathleen Sullivan, Mr Roy Sullivan, Miss Vera Scott, and Mr K. Sleight (secretary). Music for the dance was played* by the Ritz orchestra. Tap dances by June and Douglas Shepherd, and songs by Mr L. Scrimshaw, were much appreciated. The Mayoress wore a frock of sapphire blue cloquc with satin lame trimmings and a velvet cape to tone.
