THE UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE
♦ ■ LAST MEETING HELD BY MEMBERS The members of the Christchurch Unemployment Committee, now disbanded. held a last meeting in the City Council Chambers yesterday. The chairman. Mr E. H. Andrews,, said there was no need to pass a motion disbanding the committee, as that had already been done by the letter received from the Government. “I think we can say that we have not been presented with running shoes,” remarked Mr -W. E. Leadley, “but rather with comfortable carpet slippers and a pat on the back. All we can do is to express the hope that the department’s efforts to deal with unemployment will meet with sucMr Leadley moved that a letter be i sent to the City Council expressing appreciation of the work of Mr L. N. Hitchens as secretary of the committee; also that a reply be sent to the Minister for Labour, the Hon. H. T. ■ Armstrong, expressing appreciation of
the tone of his letter.® The suggestions were approved, with a motion, by Mr W. W. Scarff thanking the City (jfouncil, for providing accommodation for the committee. A letter was received from Mr J. N. McGowan, on behalf of the Little River settlers, thanking the committee for its efforts towards securing a permanent outlet for Lake Ellesmere. As a last act. the members of . the committee decided to write urging on the Government the necessity for this work.. The meeting was attended by the following members of, the committee at the time it was disbanded: —Mr E. H, Andrews (chairman), Mrs A. I. Fraer, Messrs George Harper, F. W. J. .Belton. W. W. Scarff, J. S. Barnett, B. O. Priddis, A. W.. Peverill, W.. E. Leadley, and J. W. Crampton.
