KAIKOURA COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura County Council was held on Friday. Present; Messrs F. Monk, (chaitman), P. S. Humm, T. R. Alexander, Alan Howard, B. J. Mackle, E. C. Latter, George Smith, and L. P. Blunt.
The Department of Labour notified the council that the scheme under which the council employed 12 men with a subsidy would be continued for a further six months, the men to be paid standard wages and be employed xor a 40-hour week. It was agreea to pay the higher rate of wages. . ..The Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote asking that a wet plug be installed at the show grounds as a f demonstration had been offered to the brigade. It was agreed to carry out the request and also to order spare steel tubes for the water supply "at the same time.
The North Canterbury Hospital Board’s estimates for the year showed tfc j Kaikoura quota to be ’l£ 1719 0s 6d, compared with £1457 last year, an increase of £262,
The Puhi-Puhi . Timber Company asked for permission to cart timber by motor-lorry over the Blue Duck road from bush on Parson’s and Gauffer’s property. T'.e chairman said that the council could not undertake to maintain the road for the mill. It was a costly road to repair and was not fit for conti.iuous heavy work. If the company gave a definite guarantee to maintain the road in condition to the satisfaction of the engineer he could see no objection. This was agreed to. A general rate of Id in the pound, and special rates of Jd in the pound o: the electrical loan, Jd in the pound on the Puhi-Puhi east road loan, and 11-16 d in the pound on the water supply loan, and £1 sanitation were proposed to be struck. It was agreed to send a letter of thanks to Mr Buxton for his gift of bulbs to the Garden of Memories.
The clerk reported that a gross amount of £2B had been competed from the Agricultural and Pastoral motor camping grounds since Christmas. It was agreed to offer the motor camp hall for engagement.
It wgs agreed to call a meeting to discuss the holding of the annual county ball, the profits to be given to the Takahanga Domain.
The electrical department showed a gross profit for the month of £53 19s Bd, it being said that this was the best report financially since the installation of the plant.
