“STAY-IN” STRIKE IN BRITAIN
* WORKERS IN WOOLWICH ARSENAL TROUBLE QUICKLY SETTLED (Received July 4, 1.35 a.m.) LONDON, July 3. Britain’s first “stay-in” strike lasted three hours. Two hundred and sixty workers in the Woolwich ar cnal ceased work at midday. The doors of one of the largest shops producing bullets and shells were locked. Stewards representing the men conferred with the superintendent of the department, who agreed that their grievances should receive thorough investigation, whereupon work was resumed. The chief point in the dispute related to the system of fixing payment for piecework. The strikers’ representatives state there was no bitterness. The affair has been settled, and it is certain that there will be no trouble for a long time.
