Hurling the nuclei of heavy hydrogen atoms with terrific speed at atoms of bismuth, scientists of the University at California succeeded in converting the bismuth into one of the lower varieties of radium, radium E. As proof that they really had become radium, and no longer bismuth, the bombarded atoms gave signs of radioactivity, emitting typical radium rays. The transmutation was accomplished with the magnetic resonance machine developed in the California - laboratories. In announcing the achievement Dr. John J. Livingood said: “This experiment is interesting since it is the first one reported wherein a naturally radioactive element has been artificially formed from wholly stable t constituents.”
