NURSE MAUDE MEMORIAL
UNVEILING CEREMONY TRIBUTES TO A GREAT WOMAN The unveiling of a memorial bust of Nurse Maude in the entrance hall of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association in Madras street was performed by Archbishop Julius at a special function yesterday afternoon. There were present in the official party on the dais, Mr W. G. Jamieson (chairman of the committee). Archbishop Julius, Bishop Brodie, the Rev. L. M. Rogers, moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, and the Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland. Mr Jamieson, in opening the ceremony, referred to the wonderful work which had been done by Nurse Maude, and expressed the need for the committee to carry on, not severally but united, in helping the poor and needy. In their work they should hold the spiritual example of Nurse Maude ever before them. Archbishop Julius said that during his lifetime he had often acted as a guide both in England and New Zealand. If he were showing a tourist round Christchurch, he would first take him to see the beautiful parks and gardens, then some of the wellknown buildings, the Provincial Council building, Canterbury University College, the cathedrals, and churches. But although these were beautiful in appearance there was a building in Madras street, which although to look at it might not be striking in appearance, yet was beautiful in the spirit in which it had been founded and in the work that was being done within it. He had known Nurse Maude when she was a young woman and had watched her, with her training as a nurse, combined with certain human qualities and a devoted soul, lay the foundations of what to-day had grown into a much larger organisation. Others who praised the work of Nurse Maude were Bishop Brodie, the Rev. L. M. Rogers, the Mayor, Dr. W. Irving, Messrs C. W. Bean, and H. J. Otley, chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. The bust, which is the work of Mr F. A. Shurrock, was then unveiled by Archbishop Julius, after which tea was provided for the guests.
