FAREWELL PARTY

Mrs W. G. Scannell was hostess yesterday afternoon at a very enjoyable party given at her home in Papanui road in honour of Mrs Huthwaite Ronaldson, who, with her husband and children, will soon leave for her new home in Wellington. The guests were Mrs Ronaldson and her sister. Miss Eila Chapman (Lower Hutt), Mrs Malcolm Gray, Mrs H. S. Fox, Mrs Edgar Reay, Mrs H. S. Williams, Mrs' Allan Matson, Mrs Gladstone Ward, Mrs Gerald Sherman, Mrs Bernard Stott, Mrs Guy Nicoll, Mrs Winston Philp, and Mrs L. W. Matson. OBITUARY MRS ISABELLA HUCKS * Mrs Isabella Hucks, formerly proprietor of the well-known Theatre Royal Cafe, died yesterday after a severe illness. She was in her seventieth year and had spent nearly 27 years in the restaurant-keeping business in Gloucester street. To her patrons she was better known as “Mother Hucks,” and for her personal interest in them and her willingness to help any who were in difficult circumstances, she. won the affection of many. Born at Warrnambool, Victoria, where her parents had a bookselling business, Mrs Hucks came to Christchurch with her husband 33 years ago. A few years later she was associated with Mrs Schneider in opening the Theatre Royal Cafe, of which she soon acquired the proprietorship. During the war years Mrs Hucks built , the Ozone Cafe at North Beach, and her enterprise led to a very rapid development of the seaside resort. She lent the cafe for 12 months to the Veterans’ Association for use as the first invalid soldiers’ home in New Zealand. The building was later gutted by fire, and she was a heavy loser. Mrs Hucks is survived by one son and four daughters—Mr R. H. Hucks (Sydney), Mesdames R. Donovan, A. Frame, R. H. Davison (Christchurch), and J. Faulds (Dunedin). There are 16 grandchildren. STAFF DANCE With a strong committee to further their efforts, and a whole-hearted spirit of enjoyment abroad, members of the staff of A. and T. Burt, Ltd., held their second annual dance at the Frascati last evening. Members of the committee, who have every reason to congratulate themslves upon the success of the entertainment, were Miss M, Smith, and Messrs E. H. Brook (chairman), C. H. Smart, L. J. Wilson, L. C. James, and R. Wallburton (secretary). Music was supplied by George Holland’s orchestra, and novelty dances and songs by Mr D. McKivett added to the enjoyment of the occasion.

Brook, Irene Leggett, Alma Smith, Mabel Moore, and Max Traill. COMING-OF-AGE PARTIES Mrs H. C. Osmond (Esplanade) was hostess at the Mayfair Theatre, Kair koura, on the occasion of the coming-of-age of her twin son and daughter, Kenneth and Dorothy. More than 200 guests were present, and dancing was interspersed with songs by Mrs G. Johnston, and Messrs Perry and Dobbs, and a recitation by Mr F. Henry. Community singing was also enjoyed. Mr Jensen was master of ceremonies, and Mrs Sabiston’s orchestra supplied the music for dancing.

A pleasant evening was spent in Mr R. G. Ward’s granary, Newlands, Ohoka, to celebrate the coming-of-age of Mr Ellis Hide. Novelty dances and competitions were won by Mrs Dyer and Mr Ward, Mr and Mrs S. Plaskett, and Mrs R. Hide and Mr H. Luca-..

Plavell presided at the monthly meeting of the committee of the New Brighton sub-branch of the Plunket Society, held in the Plunket rooms. The president, Mrs N. McGillivray, who has suffered a long illness, was granted three months’ leave of absence. * Mesdames W. Flavell and G. Bundy were appointed to represent the subbranch at a meeting of the Christchurch branch to-day. Nurse E. M. Rose reported that colds were very prevalent, but otherwise the health of the babies was satisfactory. The figures for the month were: Visits to rooms 171, visits to homes 14, new cases, seven.

The secretary reported that during the month subscriptions placed in the box in the Plunket rooms by parents amounted to Bs. Subscriptions had also been received from Mesdames T. Harris, E. J. Hill, E. C. Malley, D. Tait, and C. McCr-ee, and a large parcel of knitted and other clothing for babies and young children had been received from the Raunai Club.
