A NEW DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

EIFFELTON PROPOSAL

CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT END OF MONTH

The proposal to establish a district high school at Eiffelton was favoured by many speakers at a meeting cf householders in the LowciifTe and Coldstream districts at Lowclift'e on Monday evening, and it was decided to invite the committees of the Eiffelton. Wiliowby, Lynnford, Flemington, and Lowcliffe Schools to a conference di Eiffelton at the end of the month to discuss the proposal further, Mr G. Tait, chairman of the Lowcliffe School Committee, presided over an attendance of about 40. Mr Stanley Smith, of Methven, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, addressed the meeting, saying that in his opinion, the move was a good one. Mr H. C. Patterson, chairman of the Eiffelton School Committee, supported the proposal, saying that many children in the districts were deprived of a seconds y education because of the lack of convenient travelling facilities to Ashburton and further, that it was too far to travel to that centre.

ASHBURTON LODGES

Court Ashburton Foresters’ Lodge met on Monday evening, with the Chief Ranger (Bro. R. B. Barnett) presiding. Sick pay amounting to £5 13s 4d was passed for payment in favour of six members. The election of officers resulted;—C.R., Bro. C. L. Olds; S.C.R., Bro. A. P. Rattray; S.W., Wor. Bro. C. J. Bax; J.W., Wor. Bro. J. E. Meaclem; 5.8., Bro. Ingram; J. 8., Wor. Bro. Rogers. Two candidates were accepted for admission into the order. Quarterly accounts amounting to £156 5s were passed for payment. The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Ashburton. Druids’ Lodge was held cn Monday evening, with the A.D. (Bro. A. C. Vincent) presiding. Two candidates were initiated and one proposed. Bro. H. A. Vesty was appointed to represent the lodge at the meeting to be held this evening to consider the holding of a combined debating competition. It was decided to hold community singing next lodge night.
