Southland won the district competition and Mr John Bonlfant (Wakanui) the individual pen competition. Commenting on the best three pens in Mid-Can-terbury, the report said Mr Bonifant’a lambs were exceedingly choice, beautifully shaped, and full of meat, with an entire absence of waste. Two lambs of the pen entered by Mr W. M. Turner (Mayfield), second place, were of equal merit with those of Mr Bonifant, but the other lamb was inclined to excess of fat on the loins. One of the lambs entered by Mr A. C. cameron (Pendarves), who was in third place, was of exceptional merit, but the other two were fat on the back, with evidence of a slightness of flesh on the loins. The meeting decided to suggest to the Meat Producers’ Board that the weights and breeds of the winning lambs in the district competition be supplied. Members decided to thank Miss Isobel Rutherford for her offer of £lO for the best qualified hunter, 50 per cent, of the points to be awarded for type and soundness and 50 per cent, for jumping quality, ‘‘No one can question the fact that these competitions are doing good,” said Mr D. A. Morgan (chairman of the sheep committee) in his report on the Mid-Canterbury flock ewe competitions. He said it had a fine educational value but entries were lacking. There was some discussion on increasing the prize money for the next show. The following sub-committee was appointed to consider the raising of fundi for this purpose: Messrs A. N Grigg, R. J. Martin, H. Morris, A. Brown, F. Frampton, J. C. Guinness, S. P. Taylor. A. Oakley, J. W. Butterick, and Colonel Findlay.
