OBITUARY

MKS JAMES POLLOCK Mrs James Pollock, whose death occurred suddenly at her home, Hill’s road, near Leeston, was a daughter of the late Mr George Stephens, who came out to New Zealand in 1863 by the ship Chariot of Fame, and was for many years a successful farmer in the Brookside district. Mrs Pollock spent all her life in the Ellesmere district residing for some years after her marriage at Irwell. During the Great War she was a very active worker for the Red Cross and took a prominent part in other activities for the welfare of the district About 17 years ago Mr and Mrs Pollock took up a farm at Hill’s road, Leeston. Since then she was a very staunch member of the Presbyterian Church, taking an active part in various church organisations, and particularly in the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union. Always of a cheerful disposition she was greatly esteemed by a large number of friends. She is survived by her husband, one daughter (Miss Nancy Pollock), and one son (Mr G. A. Pollock), a Wellington solicitor. There was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place at the Ellesmere cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. D. N. Pryor and the bearers were Messrs D. M. West, L. B. Coc, I. Mawson, and N. A, Brown.

SOUTHLANDERS’ SOCIETY Another of the series of socials conducted by the Canterbury branch of the Southlanders’ Society for its members was held on Saturday evening in the Automobile Association’s rooms, and proved very successful and enjoyable. Music was supplied by the Lilac orchestra, and items were given by June and Douglas Shepherd (balloon and tap dances). Misses Fraser and Baird (skipping dance), and Miss Baird (Highland fling). Mr F. OFFICERS AS HOSTS DANCE AT R.N.V.R. HEADQUARTERS It is several months since the headquarters of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve has been bedecked with such a bright array of flags, bunting, and streamers as they were on Saturday evening, when the commander and wardroom officers were hosts at their first dance of the season. The guests were received by Commander C. H. Kersley and Mrs Kersley, the latter wearing a frock of eau-de-nil sajin trimmed with velvet flowers on the bodice. Sub-Lieutenant H. L. SHIRLEY SAXON CLUB The Shirley Saxon Club’s second dance of the season, held in the Shirley Masonic Hall on Saturday evening, was well attended and very successful, owing to the work of the capable social committee, Messrs H. B. Moore, R. H. Collins, W, J. Salkeld, W. B. Olorenshaw, G. E. Palmer, T. J. Southon, G. H. Rogerson, and E. Burn. Ces. Fowler’s orchestra played the music and supper extras were played by Mr L. R. Moore. Mr H. B. Moore was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Velia Reaby and Mr L. Goodman, and Miss Avis Suckling and Mr W. Alderdice were the winners of 5 a lucky spot dance.
