TRAM FARES REFUSED
WORKERS WHO OWN BICYCLES INTERPRETATION of an award An interpretation of a clause m the Nelson Westland and Canterbury electrical workers’ award was given m the Arbitration Court yesterday by “is Honour Mr Justice Page, who ruled that a worker who was paid a bicycle allowance under the clause and was called upon to travel beyond the twomile radius to his employment, was not entitled to tram fares m addition to the bicycle allowance when the tram was not used. The award provided that work done elsewhere than at the shop of the employer, and more than two miles fi om Cathedral square, was regarded as suburban work, and workers were entitled to be conveyed at the expense of the employer. It was also provided that workers using their own bicycles should be paid Is 6d a week bicycle allowance, and the interpretation of the court was sought on the question whether workers who used bicycles were entitled to tram fares in addition, notwithstanding that the tram was not used.
