DISPUTE WITH REFEREE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPRIMANDS PLAYERS For speaking disparagingly to a referee, G. Goodall, of the Harewood Hockey Club, was ordered by the management committee of the Canterbury Hockey Association at its meeting last night, to stand down for two playing Saturdays. J. Martin, of the same club, for refusing to obey the umpire, was severely cautioned. Mr C. S. Clements presided at the meeting. The report of the umpire said that on the resumption of play after halftime in the match concerned, Martin had refused to put out a cigarette when requested. The player had been ordered off the field. The captain of the team, Goodall, had then said that if the player went off the field, the whole team would go off. Rather than have such an action take place, the umpire had allowed the match to continue. When the umpire had made a remark on the bottom of the team form about the offence, Goodall had again been abusive, and said that the umpire would not referee another match. Permission was granted the University senior team to go to Wellington to compete in the university tournament. The club’s match with the Trinity team on June 20 was postponed. If necessary the match will be played later in the season. A request from the Kaiapoi Club that its fourth grade team be allowed to play at home occasionally was referred to the competitions committee. The giving of correct decisions in the match between Redcliffs and Trinty last Saturday was made difficult because neither team provided flags, said the umpire of the game, Mr C. C. Holland, in a report to the committee. It was decided to .write to both clubs informing them that flags must be provided for senior matches. The Indian Club team, which has just entered the competitions, was entered in the third B grade. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £9O 6s 4d. The Young Men’s Christian Association Club notified the committee of the withdrawal of its fourth grade team. It was agreed to write to the Canterbury Football Association congratulating it on winning the Football Association trophy. The Kaiapoi Club was fined for not giving sufficient notice of the intention of its third grade team to default. The latest date for receiving entries for the five-a-side competition and relay race was fixed for June 17.
