REGENT SOCIAL GATHERINGS

COMING-OF-AGE DANCE T© celebrate the coming-of-age .of their only daughter, Eva, Mr and Mrs H. Prattiey (Beckenham) entertained a number of guests at an enjoyable dance given at the New Cadena tea rooms. Miss Mavis Holden’s orchestra supplied the music, and Mr R. Hampton was master of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss E. Prattiey and Mr F. Andrews, Miss F. Peters and- Mr A. Smith, Master Gordon Prattiey and Miss Joyce Stringer. PLUNKET DANCE A successful dance, organised by the Waikari branch of the Plunket Society in aid of its funds, was held in the Waikari Hall, and was attended by a large number of local residents and visitors from Christchurch and surrounding districts. The organisation of the dance by the ladies of the society was most efficient, and its success was a well-deserved tribute to their efforts. The hall was effectively decorated with coloured streamers, and in front of the orchestral stage had been placed a trellis entwined with flowers. Music was provided by the EvansCampbell band, and extras were played by Mrs W. Traill and Mr R. Ormond. Mr W. P. Honeybone was master of ceremonies. HOCKEY BALL AT DOYLESTON Vari-coloured streamers and greenery were used in decorating the Doyleston Public Hall for the annual ball of the Ladies’ Hockey Club, held .on Thursday evening. Crossed hockey sticks were also prominent. There was a large and representative attendance and the ball was thoroughly successful. Excellent arrangements were made by the committee, with Mr W. G. Fussell as president, and Miss Y Beamsley as secretary. Dance music was played by the Majestic Orchestra, and Mr Leo McCloy was master of ceremonies. Prizes for a Monte Carlo waltz went to Miss C. FANCY DRESS DANCE

Members of the Dorie Women’s Institute held a very successful plain and fancY dress dance in the Ardamine Hall, where more than 200 children and adults gathered. Many of the costumes were most attractive. The judges were Mr and Mrs A. Oakley, and Mrs J. Langley. The prize-winners, amongst the children, were as follows>-Most original girl, Eva Currey (Topsy); most original boy. Rome Banks (Swagger); best dressed girl, Joan Hanrahan (Spanish dancer); best dressed boy, Graham Alexander (Indian), The adults’ prize! list was as follows:—Best fancy dresses, Mr R. Morris (Toreador), and Miss B. Crossley (Madam Pompadour); most original, Miss R. Baker (Old Dutch Cleaner), and Mr W. Smith (Cowboy); the best impersonator, Miss E. Chambers (Things of the Past), and Miss J. Kingsbury (Chinese Lady). The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Kidd and partner. Items were given by Mr and Mrs A. Oakley Misses Nancy and Kathleen Morrison. Bank’s band played the music, and Mr J. Bsard and Mr D. Harrison were masters of ceremonies.

A successful social organised by the Little River Women’s Institute was held in the Town Hall. The winners of the 500 tournament were Mr and Mrs B Stevens and Mr Whataa. BALL AT AMBERLEY

The annual ball sponsored by the Amberley sub-branch of the Plunket Society was, held in the Town Hall and was very enjoyable and financially successful.
