ELLESMERE PASTORAL ASSOCIATION

annual meeting held OFFICERS ELECTED FOB YEAR Mr J. C. Chamberlain, president, presided at the annual meeting of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association. A review of the year’s activities was given in the annual report, which said that the annual show had been successful', the gate receipts increasing by £l3 4s. In all sections entries had been good, except in the Clydesdale horse section. Last season, the association had secured for the district the services of a Clydesdale sire. Reference was made to the loss suffered by the association through the death of Mr G. E. Rhodes, its oldest patron, and a former enthusiastic exhibitor and official, and of Mi- L. R. Barnett, a keen committeeman and steward. A proposal to hold a gala to strengthen the finances had been abandoned in the early autumn because of the serious damage done by the heavy rains. The balance-sheet showed receipts totalling £lO6l 19s, and expenditure £67 12s 5d less. Assets were set down as £lßl3 14s sd, and the balance of asset's over liabilities £1567 15s Bd. It was agreed that the secretary should convey the association’s sympathy to the family of Mr T. W. Durant, who was secretary of the association from 1893 to 1903, and to the Abbott family, on the death of Mr J. A. Gordon, of Taumarunui. New members elected were Messrs W. F. Reese (Southbridge), E. J. Slattery (Leeston), M. Scott (Little Rakaia), E. J. Chatterton (Dunsandel), R. B. Coe, and L. C. Coe (Irwell). The following officers were elected: Patrons, the Hon. Sir R. Messrs G. E. Benny and S. R. Boag, who have left the district, were thanked for their services on the committee. It was decided to write to Professor R, E. Alexander, expressing appreciation of the loyal and consistent support he had given the association during his term as director of the Canterbury Agricultural College. After the business had been finished, interesting addresses were given by Dr. I. W. Weston on the better farming competition and modern economic tendencies, and by Dr. O. H. Frankel on, his observations during » tour abroad, especially about farming conditions in Russia. Dr. Frankel also summarised the work of the Wheat Research Institute.

HANMER MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB

At the weekly shoot of the Hanmer Springs Miniature Rifle Club handicap events were won by Miss N. Sedgwick, Messrs A. J. Lahmert, C. A. Lahmert, and P. McManaway. Scores off the rifle were:—Miss N. Carson 45 Volunteer Fire Brigade The winners at the weekly euchre tournament conducted by the social committee of the Volunteer Fire Brigade were Miss J. Farrow and Mr T. Maher. The leaders in aggregate competition are: Mrs L. Gilligan 55 points, Miss M. Martin 52. Mr C. Basher 54, Mr Cecil Lloyd 50. Personal Mr D. R. B. Stavert, who is returning to Scotland to visit his father, was entertained by his friends at a social evening held at Church House recently. Musical items were contributed by Mr and Mrs Stavert, Miss J. Sutherland. Messrs H. J. Peek, E. N. Toder, and N. E. Smith. Mr H. W. M. Farrow has been elected chairman of the Hanmer Springs School Committee. The school is now in its fortieth year and Mr Farrow has been chairman of committee for 10 years during that time. Rugby Football The match between teams from Cheviot and Hanmer Springs, in the Hurunui Sub-Union competition, was played on the Hanmer Domain on Saturday afternoon. Cheviot was the winner by 15 points to 9. Tries for the winners were scored by Wilson (1), Kelly (2). Dobson potted a field goal and Dunn converted one try. Hanmer’s tries were scored by Lloyd, Boucher, and Hopkins. R. Herdman was the referee. LOBURN An enjoyable social was held in the North Lob urn Hall, under the auspices of the North Lobum Hall Committee. Prizes at cards were won by Miss K. Hiatt and Mr L. Crowe. Music for dancing was played by Miss N. Fitzgibbon, with extras by Misses K. Hiatt and M. Ravenwood and Mr E. Brocherie (mouth organ). A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss K. Hiatt and Mr J. Galletly, Mr D. Brocherie was master of ceremonies.
