SPECTRE OF THE BROCKEN

TO THE EDITOE OT THE PRESS. Sir,—l read in your paper yesterday that Messrs Fraser and Scott saw the "spectre of the Brocken" off Mount Oates. I saw it off a peak of Mount Torlesse, about 1892. Six of us had climbed to the top from Porter's Pass, just before sunset. It was a very clear evening, but a cloud rolled along and we were between it and the sun. Our shadows appeared on circular disc faces in the middle. Each of the six of us was on, a separate disc. Two of us stood close together and it made a double disc. It was wonderful to see. Only myself and Mr Parkin, of St. Albans, are now living.—Yours, etc.. S. AYERS. Rangiora, March 31, 1936.
