Crossbred wool from the Chatrains and occasional West Coast clips also figured in the catalogue, and in addition c: utchin&s and pieces held ewer from the earlier auctions helped to level down the standard of the offering as a whole. There was.a lull beech of buyers, and a fair attendance of the public—more curious than directly interested—at the sale Tr.e recent North Island auctions indicated a slight easing for coarse wccii, ane there was some speculation as to whether this tendency would extend to the class of wool offered last night. Such proved to be the case. The sale was very irregular, instances 'Occurring of wool passed at the last auction failing to reach the than bid by twopence per lb. On the other hand there were sales at practically the previous rates. There was a keen demand for good coarse crossbred, of a 4-3 to 44 count. This class sold at fully up to recent northern rates. However, three-quarterbred and halfbred told irregularly, and except for the small proportion oi high-class wools, were about a halfpenny to a penny per lb easier than at the last auction. Good pieces were in demand, but inferior and crutchings and locks *of similar quality sold with less freedom. Passings were fairly heavy in the first two catalogues offered, ranging round about 20 per cent, and there were only two or three lots in the first 690 bales offered that exceeded Iflid per lb. A good deal of this ..wool, however, was sold privately before the .auction concluded- The market was freer as the sale progressed, the passings declining to less than 5 per cent in some of the catalogues. The heavy passings at auction were caused largely by some of the larger' clips being passed almost in their entirety. The buying points were well distributed. French interest* maintained their activity, and there was a moderate amount of buying on German account A fair quantity also went to Bradford representatives, but local milis did not appear much in the competition. Local fellmongering in* tarests secured a much heavier proportion cf locks and crutchings than usual,The catalogue was practically devoid of good class merino and Corriedale wool but there were several lots of super halfbred. One of five bales of Denbrae clip (Brown Bros., Waidu) sold at 191 d, much the best price >'f the- asc&on- The second classing- of ninlt Tales mad# 17|d. In the final catalogue 10 bales of halfbred ewe, brand R.W.M. over Montalto', sold at 17|d. A few lots of inter- * lotted wools sold at 17d to 173 d, and other fleece lots of halfbred at 16d to 16|d- Best Corriedale and merino prices were 15|d. There was a fair showing of merino in the catalogue, but most of it was carrying dust and was seedy. Although the sale was irregular and scarcely up to vendors’ expectations, it was a satisfactory auction considering the standard of the offering.
