ANNUAL MEETING AT ASHBURTON

SUCCESFUL YEAR REVIEWED.

The annual meeting of the Ashburton Musical Club was held on Satur* day evening, when the president (Mr E. Buchanan) presided. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £63 19s 4d.

The annual report, which reviewed the activities of the club during the year, said the membership was 66, Six programmes were submitted during the year, and the topics for discussion were chosen to give members a broader view of the subject of music rather than a detailed study .of works of individual composers. Members had

thoroughly enjoyed the evenings which were arranged by Mesdames A. ,T. Smith, A. C. Williams, Misses A. Ruddock, L. Lewis, L. Watt, and Mr J. W. Wood. The following officers were elected; —President, Mr E. Buchanan; vicepresidents, Mesdames W. McDonald, E. Ruddock, and Miss M. Jennings; treasurer, Miss A. Ruddock; secretary, Miss J. Haslam: committee, Mesdames A. T. Smith, A. C. Williams, W. Thomas, Misses L. Watt, L. Lewis, and B. Brown. Six new members were elected.

A social hour was enjoyed at the conclusion of the meeting, the following contributing items:—Piano solo, Miss A. Ruddock; vocal solo, Miss H. Drummond: and violin solo, Mr H. Fooks. pany, Ltd., has received notice of transfer to Dunedin. Mrs Rhodes-Williams, who has been visiting Mrs Allan Smith, left to-day on return to Christchurch. Greyrnouth experienced a wintry day to-day, a strong south-westerly wind bringing in turn hail and rain showers. The temperature at 9 a.m. was 47 degrees, but during the showers there was a considerable drop. All outdoor sports were postponed, and a rough sea on the bar made shipping movements impossible, three inward vessels being held in the roadstead.
