SATURDAY (Before Mr E. C. Leyvey, S.M.) ATTEMPTED SUICIDE

Charged with attempted suicide, a ypurig farm labourer was convicted and discharged, and an order was made for the suppression of his name. On a second charge of being illegally in possession of a firearm and ammunition, b e was convicted and ordered

to pay costs. The accused, who was represented by Mr H. Edgar, had pleaded guilty to both charges. • Sub-Inspector D. I. Mac Lean said the accused, who was an orphan, had obtained employment on a farm, m the meantime, he had become attached to a young woman who had recently told him she did not wish to continue the association. He hadgone to her home about 2 a.m. on March 12 and entered a room in which the young woman and her sister were sleeping. The girls’ mother .heard a noise and came in, and while her back was turned one of the girls saw the accused drawing a rifle through the Window. Two day# later he again visited the house and called the young woman into the sitting-room to speak to bar. He then produced a razor and drew it across his throat. The accused was now restored to health, and friends were willing to look after him. Mr Edgar pleaded for leniency, saying the accused was suffering from influenza at the time, and after his admission to hospital his life was end3The magistrate told accused he would give him a chance to puU himself together.
