SERIOUS RIOTING IN SPAIN
ASSAULT ON GERMAN CONSULATE
TWELVE DEATHS THROUGHOUT COUNTRY MADRID, March 9. j There were 11 deaths in riots in various towns. Twenty-four were wounded. Troops are preserving order. After week-end rioting in Cadiz, in Which a. Catholic church, a convent, and a school were burned down, rioters raided another convent and burned a statue of Jesus in the street. They savagely beat two journalists and hauled down and burned the flag of the German, Consulate. The German Charge d'Affaires protested to the Government, which promised the prevention of similar incidents.
Troops with machine-guns patrolled the streets in motor vehicles. Public buildings were guarded. The police shot a communist in a disturbance at Toledo, whereupon a general strike was declared/stopping all business. While the communist's funeral was passing, revolutionaries destroyed nine churches and four Conservative clubs in various towns.
Escalona was the scene of a gun fight involving one death. Two were killed at Castril, one at Palencia, one at Sepille, and one at Baracaldo.
