ROADS IN BOROUGH TAR-SEALING PROGRAMME FINISHED t The Borough Council was fortunate in finishing its street tar-sealing programme just before the storm during the week-end. The staff will now go on with the channelling programme in Belt, Opie, and Innes streets. It was noted that the present street channelling was able to cope with the storm water, although the council staff was kept busy clearing away debris blown about by the wind. At the Knox Church corner about half a dray-load of leaves was taken from the channels. Queen Carnival A successful ball was held in Glenavy during the week-end in support of the country queen, Mrs Forbes Wallace. There was a large attendance from all parts of the county. Mr G. Todd was master of ceremonies. The prize-winners were Miss Davis and Mr G. McPherson (lucky spot) and Miss C. Berry and Mr D. Crowe (Monte Carlo). At yesterday's ewe fair at Waihao Forks there were many yardings of sheep given by farmers of the district to be sold for the country queen, Mrs Forbes Wallace. They brought good prices. . Mrs Wallace is now leading in the queen carnival contest. Power Board's Houses Good progress is being made with the building of the South Canterbury Electric Power Board's houses in the board's block at the corner of Shearman and Glasgow streets. One of the board's employees will take up residence in the first house during the month. Personal Mrs R. W. Thorpe (Springston) and family are the guests of Mrs R. Pitt (Waihao Downs). Power Line Extensions Many applications for extensions to power lines are being received by the South Canterbury Electric Power Board. These applications are to be considered under the scheme whereby part of the guarantee is payable from the board's accumulated funds. Some applications will be held over until the officers of the board are free to investigate the details.
