TIMARU

The monthly meeting o± the Souttx Canterbury Electric Power Board was held yesterday, Mr G. Dash presiding. The' finance committee submitted a report regarding grants to various causes. The report said that the board was a trading concern, the first duty .of which to those who elected its members was to supply electricity. It was no part of the board's business to support charitable institutions, or social improvement efforts or any general endeavours for the uplift, support, or recreation of any section of the general public. The board did, however, owe some duty to its employees and might rightly consider applications having as their object the furtherance of electrical interests. The report of the general committee recommended that the extensions to Dugdales be carried out at an estimated cost of £133, less a subsidy of £26, making a total of £lO7, the guarantee required being £l7 7s. or 29s a month. > The committee recommended that a report be submitted on electricity charges for country halls when the next estimates were being considered. In a report on advertising, the finance committee suggested that an amount equal to 25 per cent, of the profit this year be allocated for such a purpose. The amount would approximate £3OO. The reports were adopted. Car Catches Fire Through the carburettor of a motorcar owned by Mr Rose, in a right-of-way in Evans street, blowing back, the vehicle caught fire yesterday morning, but by throwing earth on the engine the owner and a number of other persons soon had the outbreak extin-. gulshed. The services of the fire brigade were not necessary. Belief Society Benefits

It was reported to. a meeting of the management committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union by the chairman (Mr A. G. Knowles), that all clubs had been approached about a proposed rueen carnival with the object of raising funds to enable a representative team to go to the North Island this season. The matter had been favourably received by the clubs. t It was agreed to call a meeting of clubs and others interested at an early date further to consider the proposal. Zingari Football Club

The belief that the club might confidently look forward to better times is expressed in the annual report of the Zingari Football Club. The report says that the last season began in a spirit of optimism and this was justified. There was a marked increase in the membership over that of the previous year. There was still room for improvement in this respect, however, and the committee would impress on players and supporters the Importance of increasing membership in the various grades. Teams were entered last season in the senior, junior, and fourth grade competitions. The senior team was runner-up in the Skinner Cup competition and played off for the Beri Cup.
