ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY
IMPRISONMENT FOR; THREB MONTHS (PBISB ABSOCUTIO* TSUKMULH.) March 10. Cyril Christian Hayes, aged 25, appeared in the Magistrates Court today on charges of escaping from custody and converting a motor-car. It was explained that Hayes escaped'from the Waikeaia Borstal Institution at noon yesterday, and a large party of warders spent all night to heavy rain searching for him. He took a car from Kihikihi, but ran out of bemeine at Rukuhia. It was while he was endeavouring to obtain petrol that he was arrested by the Hamilton police. Hayes, who is at present serving a sentence of two years' reformative detention, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on the charge of escaping, and 18 months' reformative detention for conversion of the car.
