TURAKINA BERTHED AT TIMARU
N.Z. SHIPPING COMPANY'S NEW LINER
(SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.) TIMAHU, March 9. After having been kept outside in the roadstead since Sunday morning because of bad weather the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Turakina was brought safely into the port of Timaru and was berthed soon after 5 p.m. to-day by the harbourmaster, Captain H. C. White, who had been on board the vessel since--the previous morning. Heavy seas were again running to-day, but there was an absence of squalls, which made it dangerous to attempt berthing yesterday, the Turakina being a single screw vessel and having arrived in ballast. The Turakina left Liverpool on January 24 and encountered strong winds for the first few days. She called at Curacao and Panama and arrived off Akaroa at noon on Saturday, coming on under easy steam to Timaru. The vessel is commanded by Captain J. Laird, his officers being: Chief (Mr I. A. Robertson), second (Mr A. Weatherall), third (Mr A. Brown), fourth (Mr J. J. Leslie). The chief engineer is Mr C. Mays, the others being: Second (Mr C. Junuper), third (Mr E. Roberts), fourth (Mr R. Bremner). The wireless operator is Mr R. Hunn, and Mr A. Grey is the chief steward. The Turakina, which is expected to sail for Oamaru on Wednesday, will load, while in Timaru, 25.000 carcases of frozen meat, 300 bales of wool, and 1000 sacks of peas.
