AN APPRECIATION

SPORTING INTERESTS OF MR J. R. EVANS RECALLED Belief that the members of the Christchurch Football Club would have their elation at the coming of another season tinged by a sadness because of the death .of perhaps their best known fellow-member, Mr J. R. Evans, was stated by the president. Mr Denys Hoare. at the annual meeting of the club last night. For the first time in more than 60 years Mr Evans was not with them. Other speakers paid their tributes to the memory of Mr Evans, who was elected patron at the last annual meeting. A general appreciation of his work for the club was recorded. For 62 years, it was recorded, Mr Evans had been not only a member of the'club;' he had been an example of. inspiration to other members. His interest in Rugby football generally and in the Christchurch Club particularly had never flagged. Even after his own Playing days he had been always keen to help active players to understand the .finer points of the game; and he had helped also in keeping the club well managed. Records of the early 'eighties showed him to have been then in a responsible position Many players of the 'nineties could reca.ll his interest arid his counsels Until "very recently, first as president and then as patron of the club, he had been a keen follower of the matches anu a frequent visitor to the club rooms. By those who knew him in business, as in sport, he would be remembered as one who had "played the game." P A resolution followed:-"Thatthis meeting of members of the • Christchurch Football Club extends to Mrs J R Evans the club's deepest symDathy in the loss she has sustained by the death of her husband, who was an active member and an officer in the early days of the club and who, as President and patron, had endeared himself to members. It is realised that Mr Evans's long and close association with all our activities has been of great' benefit to the club, and we shall always remember him for his hich character and his* interest in the physical well-being of our young men," .
