BOWLS
MATCH POSTPONED The rnatch arranged for to-day, Canterbury Licensed Victuallers' Association versus Canterbury Bowling Club, has been postponed owing to the condition of the green. CHRISTCHURCH CENTRE Arrangements for matches made up the main business of a meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Centre last n}ght. The president (Mr A. F. Rollinson) presided over a fair attendance. Mr R. McNish (Canterbury Club) was welcomed as that club's representative, in place of Mr E. Summers, who is leaving for a trip to England. Mr W. Healey, a vice-president, was appointed manager of, the Christchurch team of seven rinks which will play at Rakaia for the Langley Cup next Saturday. The match ""committee reported that the champion of champions' rinks competition would be continued next Saturday, when two more rounds would be played. Owing to a player from one club being engaged in both the rinks and the pairs competitions, it would not be possible to adopt the same course with the pairs, but three games in the pairs would be played next Saturday. It was hoped to make arrangements for the other game to be played in order" to advance that competition to the same stage as the rinks. It was proposed to play *the Madison trophy competition, the single-handed chamnionship of the centre, on Thursday, March 19, and Thursday, March 26. At the February meeting of delegates, continued the report, it was made to appear that the Belfast Club had made arrangements for holding an open- tournament without having previously secured the necessary permit from the centre. It had been discovered subsequently that the position had been wrongly stated. The club had applied for and been granted a permit for its tournament, but this had been overlooked. Tlie match committee expressed regret that the mistake should have occurred—a mistake for which the Belfast Club was in no way to blame. The secretary had been instructed to write to the club explaining the position. The selection of certain players from a team taking part in a game for the Watson Shield induced the match committee to make some enquiries, in which it was shown that many entries had been made with only the skip named. Steps were taken to have the conditions of the competition complied with, by naming the complete rink, and the secretary had been instructed to insist on that being done in future entries. No game had been won this season by any rink the constitution of which was open to question. The committee had drawn up a special timetable in connexion with the Easter tournament, for play on Good Friday. >when, the first game would be started at 9 a.m., the second game at 11 a.m., and the third game at 3 p.m. That would allow.of an interval from 1 p.m to 2 p.m. for lunch, followed by another hour in which there would be no play It was hoped that that will be considered an adequate recognition of the scruples of many bowlers regarding plav on Good Friday. . J The report was adopted.
BARNETT TIKI MATCH COMPLAINT AGAINST WELLINGTON CENTRE "The Wellington Centre is not trying to pull In very kindly with this match. There is always trouble over it," declared the president of the Christchurch Bowling Centre (Mr A. F. Rollinson), in referring to the annual match for the Barnett Tiki, at last night's meeting of the centre. After discussion the meeting .agreed to play the match in Christchurch on Saturday, March 28, on which day seven Canterbury rinks will be in Dunedin for the Redpath Shield matches.
The president's remarks were made upon receipt of information from the Wellington Centre that March 28 was its only date suitable for the Barnett Tiki match.
Wellington, it was stated at the meeting, had been informed some time ago that March 28 would not be suitable for Canterbury. The president remarked that it was always a difficult task to arrange the match, arid the trouble came mainly from Wellington. A motion that Wellington be informed that March 28 was. not. suitable arid that the match should be "called off for the season was moved by Mr G. W. a Smithson, but was* defeated by an amendment by Mr B. J. Finnegan that the game be played. Mr Finnegan s&id that those bowlers who iiad travelled to Wellington for the march last year had first refusal of inclusion in the play in Christchurch. Though some *of those, men were going to Dunedin on March 28, a team could be gathered together to. meet Wellington. It would be a pity to see the match dropped, ae the trophy had been given by. a very old bowler. *
There were no disentient voices when the amendment was put to the meeting
