With the prospect of removal of the headquarters of the Hurunui Licensing Committee from Aniberley to Rangiora. and a consequent saving in expense, considerable interest will be taken in the result of the poll for; the election of a committee, which will oe held to-day• ' The representative of Bangiqra on the committee, Mr W. Unemployed Labour

The application from the Woodend Domain Board for unemployed labour to carry out some developmental work at the domain has been completed, and men will be drafted to the work from next Monday. There were three registrations of unemployed men in Rangiora - last week, One will receive sustenance, our will work on the Ashley river protective scheme, and the third will work with a local body. One registration has been held over for further investigation. The Rangiora Unemployment Committee did not meet yesterday. Ping-pong Tournament

A memorial service to SerjeantMajor W. G. Humphreys was conducted by Captain D. Houghton at the Rangiora Salvation Army Hall on Sunday evening, when there was a good attendance, Captain Houghton paid a tribute to the work of Ser-geant-Major Humphreys and Mr J. Lindon, and Mrs A. The town clerk tMr J, M. Frasert has returned to Rangiora from the annual conference of the Municipal Association of New Zealand at Napier. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) will not return until next week. Constable J. J. Kearns, of Christchurch, has arrived in Rangiora to succeed Constable A. V. Smith. Constable G, J. Taylor, who has been relieving pending the arrival of Constable Kearns, will return to Chrislr church.

Regent Theatre

Two special features will In presented this afternoon and evening at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora, the sparkling comedy "Ginger," starring Jane Withers, and the Max Baer versus Joe Louis fight film, together with an interesting programme of supporting subjects. In the latest comedy success, "Ginger," Jane Withers, who was the "Meanie" of "Bright Eyes," stands out as a comedienne of remarkable ability and captivates the audience from the very beginning. KAIAPOI

The Kaiapoi branch of the Workers' Educational Association held its annual meeting, with the president, Mr W. McPartlin, presiding. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P.; president. Mr R. Taplin; vice-president, Mr W. McPartlin; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Green; committee, Mesdames Dierce, B. "Forrest, Messrs C. Mcintosh, J. Jowers, J. SCARGILL

The annual meeting of the Scargill Miniature Rifle Club was held in the Scargill hall. The president of the club, Mr L. J. McNaughton, presided. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £9. The report said that last year the club had a very successful season's shooting, and won the senior grade team's competition in the North Canterbury Association's -winder Vovjrnament. At the District High School recently the annual tennis and cricket fixtures were played between the present pupils of the secondary department and the old .girls and boys. In the cricket match, the Old Boys, batting first, compiled sfrruns, D. Wilding 22 and M. Burt 21 being the chief scorers. High School replied with 48, F. Lukey and P. Dunbar scoring 12 and 10 respectively. In the second innings Old Boys were dismissed for 26 runs. 1 Left with 36 runs to make to win in a quarter of an hour, High School at stumps had lost seven wickets for 20, C. The annual picnic of the Marshland Methodist Sunday School was held at The Pines on Saturday in perfect weather. A very happy day was spent-in bathing and games, and a sports programme waa run off. At the February meeting of the Ohoka Women's Institute, Mrs J. Ward pr M s rs e Macleod (Loburn), organiser for North Canterbury, gave a friendly talk on general institute work. An interesting address on the League of Nations, how it originated and its objects, was given by the Rev. Horwood, of Kaiapoi. A- vocal solo was given by Mrs J. Ward. Members were asked to submit nominations for the committee to be elected next month. The competitions resulted as follows: Best bloom: Mrs Cottle 1, Mrs W. Richards 2, Miss J. PREBBLETON

A cricket match was played on the prebbleton Domain between a PrebWeton team and the Waltham Arms Club. The visiting team made 86 runs, winning the match by five runs. French with 27 runs made the best score of the game, and Smith, Hampton and Hands took most of the wickets. ♦ School Picnic

The annual picnic of the Prebbleton School was held on Friday at Corsair Bay. The weather,was warm and sunny and a large party of children with their parents and friends spent a pleasant day. Bathing was popular and a sports programme was conducted by members of the committee. During the day Miss S. Thomson, the infant mistress, who has been granted leave of absence to visit Great Britain, was presented with a travelling rug from the members of the committee. Members of the girls' sewing class also gave Miss Thomson a book, and she received numerous gifts from her small pupils. The results of the sports were as follows:

Thanksgiving Service

A harvest thanksgiving service was conducted on Sunday evening at the Presbyterian Church, Tai Tapu, by Mr V. French, social service worker, and manager of the Presbyterian Orphanages. The rough weather prevented a large attendance. Supplies of jam, sugar, fruit, and vegetables were sent to the orphanage. Dressmaking Classes So many members have been en* rolled for the dressmaking class held by Miss McMillan and arranged by the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers* Union, that it has been found necessary to hold them on two days of each week. 1 * \ ARTHUR'S PASS The various berrying plants are now delighting visitors by their pretty colours. The small-leaved wineberry has fewer berries than last year, but its white, pink, red, and black berries are most attractive. Among the coprosmas red and orange are fully ripe; the blue ones just beginning. Snowberries and the various heaths are now past their best. Water has now been laid to the alpine beds on the railway platform, and the work of watering should now be much easier. Social At a social held recently, Mrs Paston and Mr Goring were the card winners. There was a good attendance and a very enjoyable dance concluded the evening.
