REGATTA AT STEWART’S GULLY CANTERBURY MOST SUCCESSFUL ■’ | . ;• CLUB Canterbury oarsmen had the biggest day of ‘ their season :oh Saturday when the Christchurch Regatta Club held its annual regatta at Stewart’s Gully. With crews from Wellington. Star. (Wellington), and Timaru Rowing. Clubs competing, , keen competition was assured- and all the regatta club needed for success was 'fine weather and good water. These it had. and the day’s sport was one of the best the club has had for some time. The races were rowed over a mile course on a rising hde. Tlie breeze was so light that It scarcely disturbed the surface of the water, but the advantage the oarsmen gained from counteracted to some extent by the heat of the sun. Where finishes were vigorous—and they were in most of the races—the oarsmen found the hesit trying. Although the visiting crews rowed well the crews from the local clubs had measure in most of the races, and were able to outdo six times for a second in the light wclgn maiden fours, a second in the light weignx maiden double sculls,.and a third In the dunmr double sculls. Star «cws + started in fAur races and were first in the jup ot fours and third In the light-weight SaldSTdoubJe sculls. A WHlingtomcrevv, the only one from the club at Jn® re won the junior double sculls. 6 Canterbury was most successful c!ub and substantially Increased its lead ln the competition for the D.CL. Cup, which Is awarded to the club affiliated to the Canterbury Rowing Association scoring most points- in the season s regattas. Canterbury scored 20 points, a ”£with aggregate of 63 has a lead which will be very difficult to overcome. Akaroa scored 15 noints, and maintained Its position as second in the competition. Tregurtha, H. Spoor) 1 Cure (J. R. Begg, L. Burney)' .. 2 Timaru <C. de Clifford, J. W. Mitchell) 3 Star (Wellington), Union No. 1, Union No. 2, and Avon also started. Won by three lengths, with about three feet between second and third. Wellington won all the way, but the second position was in doubt until the line was reached. YOUTHS’ FOURS Canterbury (R. S. Hampton. H. W. Millard, H. F. Flower, S. M, Gray) 1 Union No. 1 (E. Hessell, A. Palmer, E. Taylor, J. Fleming) .. ..3 Christ’s College (A. T. Johns, J. R. B. Orbell, A. Adams, W. T. Everest) 3 Cure, Star, Union No. 2, and Akaroa cilso started. Won by a length, with a similar distance between second and third. The Christ’s College crew was up with Canterbury and Union No. 1 approaching the line, but was unable to stay the distance. MAIDEN DOUBLE SCULLS Canterbury (L. Robertson, H. S. Read) 1 Union No. 1 (T. Harris, G. Browne) .. 2 Akaroa (K. A. Rhodes, R. J. Phillips) 3 Timaru, Sumner-Redcliffs, and Union No. 2 also started. Won by two lengths, with the third crew well back.
