OBITUARY

MRS J. HOWARD JACKSON The death is announced of Mrs-J. Howard. Jackson (Dunedin), at the age of 84 years. Mrs Jackson's father; Mr Gilbert Mair, arrived in the Dominion .in 1824, and settled at the Bay of Islands at a time when the Maoris were suspicious of the white men and their works, and were easily provoked to violence. He and his family were driven out of Whangarei by hostile natives, and , narrowly escaped the sack of Kororareka by.Hone Heke in 1845. Mrs Jackson's mother was born in Cornwall, and came to New Zealand in 1819, her father being engaged by the Rev. Samuel Marsden to teach the Maoris useful arts. She learnt to speak the Maori language fluently in a short time. It was after she had returned to Australia that she, met Gilbert Mair, to whom she was married by the Rev. Samual Marsden in 1827, and went to live in the Bay of Islands. Mrs Jackson, one of a family of 12, was married in 1877, her husband being a surveyor . and, civil engineer. He was later manager of the Blue Spur gold mine- After a short illness he died in October, 4916, Both of Mrs Jackson's sons predeceased her the younger, Howard Maurice, being killed in action on Gallipoli on August 27, 1915, and the elder, Alan Mair, who also served in the war, dying in Canada in 1929, largely as the* result of shell shock and illness contracted at the war. Three daughters survive her—Mrs •A. J. Chrystal, Miss . Ethel Jackson,. and, Miss Dorothy Jackson.

SALE OF WORK AT BURWOOD The ladies of All Saints' Church, Burwoqd, organised a garden party funds to be held in the vicar's grounds on Saturday afternoon. Owing to the inclemency of the weather, it was decided to abandon the garden party. The sale of work was held in the Parish Hall. The Rev. C. A. Watt; entertainer, Mrs Hawke; fish pond and ice-cream stall, members of the young women's Bible class.

BIRTHDAY PARTY To celebrate the birthday anniversary of Miss Hetty Cdckle, a surprise party visited the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs A. E. Cockle, Collingwood street, New Brighton, on Saturday evening. An enjoyable time was spent with games and competitions, winners of competitions were Mrs Hastings, Miss D. Hull, and Mr B. Penrose. Mr C. O. Thompson was master of ceremonies. Included in those present were Mr and Mrs A. E. Cockle, Mr and Mrs C. O. Thompson, Mesdamea J. Were and Hastings, Misses Hetty. Cockle, D.
