PRISONERS SENT TO GAOL
WANGANUI SENTENCES (PBISS ASSOCIATION T»LBOEAU.) WANGANUI, February 22. Victor Price, for abduction at Rangataua, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr Justice Ostler to-day.
George Michalick received six years' imprisonment with hard labour for rape and indecent assault at Raetihi. His Honour said he had seriously considered ordering a flogging, which the prisoner richly deserved, but he would not impose this sentence as he had pleaded guilty. His Honour said that the prisoner was not to be trusted with his liberty and would have to be put away so that children on country roads could be safe. Eric Lionel Healy was admitted to probation for one year for breaking and entering. Alfred James Webber, 31 years, for unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl of 15 years and eight months, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. His Honour commented that the girl had been placed in the prisoner's care, a trust which he betrayed. Maianga Utiku Marumaru was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon for slashing a young Maori woman in the face with a safety-razor blade. The prisoner was given an excellent character. It was explained that the act, which occurred in Victoria avenue, was not premeditated.
