CLEANLINESS OF CHRISTCHURCH STREETS
TO THE EDITOR Of THE I'REtffl. Sir—May I have space to comment on Mr A C. Charlton's statement about the cleanliness of the streets in Christchurch, the wide open streeUß, and the working men's houses. I do not think Mr Charlton was taken down Soutbwark street, off Manchester street. 1 think it is the dirtiest street in New Zealand, and that is saying a lot. Some of the dumps (may I call them?) are not fit for r>igs to live in. I think Mr Charlton should go round and see for himself; he would soon change his tunc. I hope he takes a walk round there, and sees for himself.—Yours, etc.. WAKE UP CITY COUNCIL. February 10, 1936. P'Soulhwark street is hi a business area, and no new residences would be erected there." said Mr E. H. Andrews, Deputy-Mayor, when he was shown this letter. "It is one of the original lanes of Christchurch, and is now largely occupied by Hindus, but their residences are undpr constant inspection. It is not fair to condemn Christchurch on one particular street, such as this. This street is regularly cleaned by the works department."]
