OBITUARY
m W. J.-STODDART
Mr William James Stoddart,. who «fcd at bis residence, "Willow Farm," Willowby, Ashburton county, on Saturday, was.one of the early settlers in the Willo-vby district, where he was a prominent farmer- for about 57 years. Mr Stoddart was . born at County Cayan, Ireland, and came to New Zealand, with his .parents when he was M than one : year old. The: family hvtd at Christchurch for some years, Wrtil Mr Stoddart received a thorough taowledge of farming, and went to the Willowby district at the- age of 18 years; He eventually obtained his present holding, which he farmed fewssfully. For many years he was i the Longbeach: tload Board and ~ ulowby school committee, while he :*asa member of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He had! considerable success with his exniDits of cattle at various shows in canterbury. He leaves a widow Wdl only son, Mr W. H. Stoddart uWelton).

DUNEDIN, February 23. Art death occurred on Saturday Ptyi of Mr Vernon Smith, who was WU known in the hardware trade in SJttgaia. He was a son of Mr J. Jj?°wy Smith, formerly a member of «•• ironmongery firm of Smith and .of Invercargill.
