ASHBURTON PARK PROPOSAL SUPPORTED . "Satisfaction with the movement to obtain a park for the Hampstead portion of the borough to provide facilities for recreation in Ashburton East was expressed by the Hampstead Women's Institute, which heartily supported the efforts being made, at its meeting" on Thursday; - Inspection of'Kiver Many " early " morning sightseers visited the Ashburton river •at the traffic bridge yesterday, when the heavily.flooded state.of the river presented a sight which has not been equalled for six years. At this point the river comprised one large stream more than half a mile Wide, and considerable interest was shown in the washed-out section of the railway line. Local residents visited the locality in a steady stream throughout the day, and the traffic across the bridge was controlled by the county traffic inspector (Mr E. N. Johnson), assisted by the police. Magistrate's Court - ,At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Ashburton yesterday, Mr Robert Kerr, Justice of the Peace, presided. Ronald Nelson, of Newlands, and Gordon Alexander Sloper, of Willowby, were charged with striking each other with clenched fists in East street on December 15. Each was convicted and ordered to pay costs 12s. Personal Mr G. B. Brown, supervisor of mails at the Ashburton Post Office, is on annual leave, and will visit the North Island. Miss R. Doak, who left the Allenton School, where she had been a teacher for three years, yesterday, was presented with an electric iron by Miss O. White (infant mfctress) from the staff, in view' of her approaching marriage. Tinwald Town Board The monthly meeting of the Tinwald Town Board was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present Messrs H. B. Millichamp (chairman), W. Bryant, J, L. Soal, and H. W. Carpendale. In reply to the board's letter about the" fee charged for roll alterations, the Valuation Department advised that the reason for the increase was the extra work entailed in altering the roll during, the last year. It' was v decided to ask Mr W. Patterson (town clerk, Ashburton), who will represent the Ashburton Borough Council at the annual conference of the Municipal Association, to represent the Town-Board.

The clerk reported that to date there was £43 4s 2d rates and £26 5s sanitary fees (outstanding, these being the smallest amounts outstanding, at the time of imposing the penalty, for, the last six years. As the Lagmhor road had been de-: clared a main high it. was resolved to undertake the maintenance of that portion of the road in the board's district, and to apply to the Highways Board for the usual subsidy. Women's Division, Farmers' Union The Ashburton branch qf the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union met yesterday,, when Mrs E, M. Begg (president) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the Royal Family in the death of King George V. It was decided to.

extend sympathy to Mrs C. Begg, in the death of her mother. The president reported that 13 housekeepers had been placed with members of; the union' in two months, • three being with members of the Ashburton branch. An invitation to attend the birthday party of the Ruapuna branch was accepted. Competitions resulted as follows: Bloom, Mrs A. W. Penny 1, Mrs G. Tait 2, Miss C. Macmillan 3; vegetables, Mrs Tait 1, Miss Macmillan 2. Mrs Penny 3; fruit, Mrs Begg 1. Sports Postponed Because of the rain and the wet state 'of grounds, the Ashburton County Cricket Association's competition matches set down for to-day have been postponed. The lawn tennis match arranged between the Canterbury Asso- ; ciation and the Mid-Canterbury SubAssociatlon at Chhstchurch, to-day,: was also postponed and might be played later in the season. Hampstead Women's Institute The Hampstead Women's Institute met on Thursday. Mrs H. J. Constable presided. It was decided. to support the Pan-Pacific delegate. Members were reminded of the Mid-Canterbury annual conference to be held in April, and urged to enter for the competitions. A report on the new programme was presented by the secretary and' proved satisfactory. A drama circle will be formed at an early date to prepare for the coming festival. A very iriteresU in ? talk on child education was given by Mr S. G. Macfarlane. Mrs Vincent gave an instructive demonstration on celophane hair bands and belts. Nominations for president, vice-presidents, and committee were received. Competitions judged by Mrs Vincent resulted as follows:—Something out of waste material: Mrs B. Coward 1, Mrs M. Thompson and Mrs McEleer (equal) 2, Mrs H. Flatman 3; vase of mixed flowers: Mrs W. Thompson 1, Mrs W. Rose 2, Mrs Pike and Mrs -J. Hunt, sen. (equal), 3; apple jelly:. Mrs Kruse i and Mrs J. Hunt* sen. (equal) 1, Mrs I Morton 2, Mrs Rose 3. The hostesses 1 were Mesdames H. Stone sen., Tinker, i and Thompson, jun. Pig Market There was a small entry, of pigs only, at the weekly market conducted by the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association in Ashburton yesterday. The sales of pigs were as follows: Weaners 10s 6d to 17s 6d, porkers 35s 6d, fat pigs 40s 6d to 54s 6d. The attention of readers is directed to the Ashburton advertisement appearing on this page. CHERTSEY Mrs J. W. Watson presided at the February meeting of the Chertsey Women's Institute, held in the Pendarves Hall. The attendance was not large as harvesting operations were, in full swing Reference was made by the president to the death of King George V., and the meeting opened with the National Anthem. Mrs F. Curtis, president of the MidCanterbury Federation, and Mrs Constable, secretary, were present at the meeting and both spoke on institute work, Mrs Constable describing the health camp held at Staverley. Miss Isabel Campbell, of the Domestic Science School, Dunedip, gave a very entertaining talk on "What I do with my time in Dunedin." It was agreed to help one very sick member in the institute who was now in hospital. Members were reminded to hand ■in nominations for the annual meeting in March. Letters of thanks were received from the Institute for the Blind, health camp committee, and Disabled Soldiers' Association.
