BREAKING AND ENTERING

TWO MEN SENT TO PRISON Two men who appeared on two charges of breaking and entering arid one of committing theft were sentenced by his Honour Mr Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court yesterday to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. The men w!ere Thomas Hill, aged 28 years, arid Harry Swann. aged 33 years. Mr J. K. Moloney, who appeared for the men, said both had been living in grinding poverty. Hill was married with two children and Swann had a family of four children, who had been ill. Swann's excuse was that he had stolen for his children. His Honour said it appeared that the men had embarked willingly on a series of crimes which seemed to be deliberate raids on houses, and had stolen things which could not be regarded as material to the welfare of children. He would be doing his duty in sentencing them, as he did, to two years' imprisonment with hard labour on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent.
